At the heart of every classic Birkenstock sandal and shoe is the original anatomically shaped footbed — a design that has been carefully developed down to the smallest detail.
Inspired by the natural feeling of standing in sand, the Birkenstock footbed is designed to support the foot's natural shape and encourage a comfortable, stable stance. With its combination of deep heel support, longitudinal and transverse arch support, toe grip and protective footbed edge, it provides support where your feet need it most.
Deep Heel Cup
The deep heel cup helps keep the heel bone in its natural position while supporting the surrounding foot tissue. This gives your heel a secure, stable foundation and provides substantial support even in an open sandal.
Heel Mould
The raised heel mould helps stabilise the rear of the foot and encourages a natural walking motion. It also helps engage the calf muscles as you move.
Interior & Exterior Longitudinal Arch Supports
Running along both sides of the footbed, these raised arch supports surround and support the tarsal bones. They help stabilise the foot as it moves through each step while encouraging a naturally balanced position.
Transverse Arch Support
Positioned across the middle of the footbed, the transverse arch support helps stabilise the metatarsal bones and supports a naturally strong and balanced stance.
Toe Grip
Raised areas beneath the toes help keep them relaxed and naturally spread out rather than compressed together. The toe grip also encourages the natural rolling movement of the toes as you walk.
Protective Footbed Edge
The footbed is raised around the front of the sandal or shoe to help protect the toes. This elevated edge provides a little extra protection during the natural rolling motion of the foot.
